What the health is price transparency?

The Price Transparency Rule is a federal law that went into effect January 2021. This law requires all hospitals to make their prices publicly available via a machine-readable file (MRF). There are a couple of other laws at play here, but essentially, price transparency is achieved by making the costs associated with medical services public.

Our data is sourced from the machine-readable files posted by the hospitals themselves as a part of compliance with the government's Price Transparency Rule. While Turquoise Health is working towards a future where providers and payers collaborate on our platform to create 100% upfront price certainty, it's important to note the limitations and errors that are sometimes found in this data.

A ‘Turquoise Verified’ badge next to a provider’s name indicates accurate rates. Other rates are provider-reported, which may have errors.
Many services are not charged at a flat rate. Total cost depends on total charges, days spent, or other services performed.
The rate listed is only the ‘Facility Portion’ of the hospital stay. You may receive additional bills or charges for a service.
It’s a service that a patient could likely compare and contrast potential provider costs for the same service.
Check your Summary of Benefits from your insurer and verify info like your deductible, out of pocket max, copay, etc.
We’ve only listed a select group of common shoppable services. There are many other (less common) hospital services that are not listed.
For a given service, inquire directly with the provider. There is a good chance your insurance is still covered.
You should not use Turquoise Health to compare rates. Contact Medicare or your state’s Medicaid program directly instead.
